63 Thought-Provoking Weekly Journal Prompts to Boost Mindfulness the Entire Year

TL;DR [WEEKLY JOURNAL PROMPTS]: Let me guessโ€ฆ itโ€™s either a new year and youโ€™re working on your resolutions or you’ve been hearing about journaling, but have no idea how youโ€™re going to come up with 52 journal prompts for the whole year. Either way, Iโ€™m here to help! As an avid journaler, Iโ€™m always looking for new journaling methods and prompts, and Iโ€™ve found that itโ€™s super beneficial to have weekly prompts to respond to. I put all these together, packaged them up, and organized them into this blog post youโ€™re reading right now. Whether youโ€™re at the beginning of your journaling journey or have been writing your whole life (like myself!), these prompts are perfect to answer throughout the year.

Youโ€™re starting your self-growth journey and have seen tons of people talking about how impactful journaling is. Theyโ€™re telling you to write everyday, but you suddenly freeze because you have no idea how youโ€™re going to come up with that many things to write about.

Thatโ€™s where I can step in. You see, journaling doesnโ€™t have to be an everyday activity. While I believe itโ€™s best to write every day (even if itโ€™s just a paragraph or a few bullet points), itโ€™s not completely necessary. As long as youโ€™re doing it on a regular basis, thatโ€™s what truly matters. If youโ€™re just starting out, the thought of writing every SINGLE day can feel really overwhelming โ€” especially if you donโ€™t exactly love writing.

So today, Iโ€™m going to give you 63 weekly journal prompts you can respond to. Theyโ€™re all themed, which makes each one unique. By the end of this post, I hope youโ€™ll find so many good ideas, you canโ€™t help but to start writing today!

Are you ready, Star? Letโ€™s do this!

This post is all about weekly journal prompts.

Why is weekly journaling so helpful?

I’m sure you hear all about daily journaling, but I believe weekly journaling is just as effective โ€” especially if you’re not used to writing all the time. The best way to form a new habit is to do it with ease and patience, and that certainly applies to journaling.

I strongly recommend starting with weekly journaling so you can start to get a feel of it. Then, if and when you’re ready to pick up the pace, that’s when you can write more often. But until then, keep it nice and steady.

Journaling, in a more general sense, is so helpful because it encourages self-reflection, improves your writing skills, makes you a better thinker, gives you a creative outlet, and so much more. Feel free to read this blog post if you want a more detailed explanation as to why journaling is such an effective, powerful self-growth tool. (Oh, and if you don’t already know, I’m a HUGE advocate for journaling, and you can find all sorts of journal-related posts on my blog.)

How do I use these prompts?

You might be wondering, “How the heck do I use these prompts?” Don’t worry โ€” I’ve got you!

Technically speaking, the easiest way to respond to these prompts is to grab a sheet of paper and a pen or pencil. In terms of your approach, I recommend reading the question, thinking about it for a minute, letting some thoughts come to mind, and then translating those thoughts into words on the paper. I think this is a pretty standard, logical way to approach it!

But… if you’re feeling a little adventurous and out-of-the-box, you can simply use the prompt as a starting point and let your brain do the rest. I prefer this approach because my mind likes to wander quite fast (and far), and I think you’ll also like this method if your mind works similarly.

Throughout the year, I encourage you to answer the prompts in both ways. Sometimes you just want to answer them directly, and other times you have a bit more to say.

I actually have an entire post (the same one I mentioned earlier) outlining my favorite beginner-friendly journaling techniques and methods, so I highly suggest reading that when you get a chance. It’s perfect for you, my fellow journaler!

Alright, now that you know why weekly journaling is beneficial for the beginning of your self-growth journey and know how to use these prompts, let’s get to the good stuff.

There are 52 prompts for each week of the year, and each week has its own theme. Thereโ€™s all kinds of themes like gratitude, mindset shifts, forgiveness, self-compassion, and so many more.

I also included 11 extra prompts (totaling to 63 weekly journaling prompts) in case you need a few more ideas or you want to do some extra journaling throughout the year (you’re such a go-getter, I love it!).

Just a reminder: within each week are several questions for every topic. Of course, you can answer each one, but you certainly donโ€™t need to. I just included them so the prompts have more depth and versatility. Do whatever makes you feel good, โ€˜cause, I mean, thatโ€™s kind of the point, right?!

Time to Take Action

We’ve reached my favorite part: it’s time to take action. Once you’ve read the entire post, I want you to choose one prompt to start off. Looking ahead at the whole year, it can feel paralyzing trying to come up with 52, so itโ€™s important to keep it simple.

Feel free to share your response in the comments. You can even email me if you’d feel more comfortable doing that. I canโ€™t wait to see what journal prompt you plan on respond to first!

As always, if there’s a theme I didnโ€™t include or you need some more ideas, donโ€™t hesitate to ask! Leave a comment, email me, or shoot me a DM on Instagram and I’ll be more than happy to help.

Until next time, keep shining, Star โ€” one day at a time.
